Rafaello Sanchio, son of the painter Giovanni Sandy and Maria di Batista di Nicolas Charla, was born in Urbino on March 28, 1483, Good Friday.
He died in Rome on April 17, 1520, also on Good Friday. This coincidence is underlined by Vasari, the artist's first biographer, but also by other sources, which insist on a kind of parallel between the "God of art", Raphael, and Christ, the "God of nature".
What is certain is that the historiographical tradition of the 16th century surrounds Raphael with an aura of legend and holiness, due both to the nobility of his manners and to the well-known beauty of his characteristics, which resembled Christ's in the paintings, and to the virtuosity with which he painted marvelous works of absolute technical perfection.
So Raphael's life, blessed by chance, unfolded, in thirty-seven fiery years, between his birthplace, Florence, and Rome: in those centers, that is, which, thanks to his own presence, became one of the greatest of Renaissance culture.
