Giorgione is one of the most enigmatic figures in the history of painting.
The reconstruction of the catalogue of his works is the subject of constant debate, the works attributed to him, none of which are signed, are subject to constant verifications as to their author and his iconography is also the subject of countless interpretations.
Acting for less than ten years in the forefront of painting art in Venice - a short period that is nevertheless an inexhaustible source for the research of scholars - and having been honored by his contemporaries, he is an artist who in the eyes of the later ones will quickly take legendary dimensions.
In him they saw the genius imposed on the world by the power of her art: a sudden but also dazzling appearance, destined to shine centuries.
The sources of the 16th century determine his identity based on the city from which he comes, Casterlfranco Veneto, where he must have been born around 1477-1478.
The approximate date of his death is inferred from an exchange of correspondence between Isabella d'Este and her agent, from which we learn that in 1510 Giorgion had died some time before.
A few years later, Giorgio da Casterfranco (Giorgio or Giorgio in the Venetian dialect) is referred to as Giorgione, which reveals not only his high physical stature but also his morale.
The rave reviews that have since followed him are of course revised in the light of a rigorous investigation, but there is no doubt that it fully vindicated his reputation.
Even if we keep the works he produced to a minimum, the fact remains that these works indelibly marked Venetian painting, sealing a decisive turn towards modernism. (From the presentation on the back cover of the book)
