After Giorgione's death in the plague of 1510, Titian acquired a prominent position in the new generation of Venetian artists.
His frescoes in Padova were extremely successful, impressing even Sebastiano del Piobo, who left Venice to settle permanently in Rome in 1511.
With his organized workshop and the support of important people, such as Andreas Navazero and Pietro Bembo, he received in 1513, at the age of 25, his first PUBLIC commission - the creation of a painting with a battle performance for the Doge's Palace. For this work, which was destroyed in 1577, Titian demanded and received some important privileges, which helped him lay the foundations for the creation of his vast fortune, but causing the envy of the elderly Giovanni Bellini, who for years was the official painter of Venice.
In 1516, Titian established himself as an artist. That year he was assigned the Ascension of the Virgin Mary for the Altar of the Basilica of the Frari - a fact that gave him the opportunity to come into contact with the Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso d'Este - and after the death of Giovanni Bellini, on November 29, he took the position of the official painter of Venice.
