BOOK - GOYA - No3 - ORAMA PUBLICATIONS

Francisco Goya i Luthientes was born on March 30, 1746 in Fuentedos, a small rural village in the Aragon region of Northern Spain.

Although his mother's grandparents belonged to the landowners' aristocracy, his father Francisco struggled to survive by practising as a gold-plater, and the family lived by quite limited means.

In 1760 his parents returned to their hometown of Zaragoza, where Francisco enrolled in a religious school. He was right there, at the Pias School, where he would have his first contact with art and where he would meet Martin Napater, a friend who would remain with him throughout his life.

In the same year, when Goya was fourteen years old, he became an apprentice in the studio of the most important painter of Zaragoza, Jose Luthan Martinez. There Goya was able to learn how to perfect his tracing skills by copying countless engravings.

His humble origins did not help him to open the doors of the glittering world of art and artists, but it was his persistent and determined character that helped him stand on his own two feet after his first failed attempt to enter the Royal Academy of St. Ferdinand in Madrid in 1774.

He tried again in 1776, submitting a project with a historical theme, but failed a second time. After this event, we know very little about his life, although, it seems, he became a student of Francisco Bayer, a successful painter of the Spanish court. (From the version)
