BOOK - MANET - No16 - ORAMA PUBLICATIONS

Edouard Manet was born on January 23, 1832 in Paris, on de Peti Ogisten Street, now Bonapart Street.

His family is big-bourgeois. His father is an official of the Ministry of Justice, a knight of the Order of the Legion of Honour. His mother, Eugenia Dezire Fournier, is the daughter of a diplomat and baptister of the King of Sweden.

Edouard has two younger brothers, Ezen and Gustav. His mother's brother, Colonel Fournier, a decisive figure in Manet's artistic predisposition, takes him with him to the Louvre and encourages him to paint naturally. In 1844, Manet enrolled in Rollen College.

From a school report, we learn that Edouard is a student with a "difficult character", shows "lack of attention" and "works a little".

In college he meets Antonin Proust, who will become a friend of life and who will later write his biography.

He is rejected in the entrance exams for the Naval School and decides to take on the military ship Le-Avr-e-Guantellup. He travels for six months and reaches Rio de Janeiro.

Returning to France, he re-took the exams for the Naval School, without success. In the end, he gets permission from his father to study painting.

Manet's parents will never be able to understand their son's work. His mother will often advise him to change his style and turn to a more traditional painting that suits the social class of the family. (From the version)
