The Borghese Art Gallery was erected between 1613 and 1620 in the large gardens outside Porta Pincana, as a suburban residence, with the purpose of hosting the collection of Cardinal Scipio Borghese, a passionate and cultured collector of works of art.
Initially the cardinal gathered there a set of sculptures of Roman antiquity. Very soon, thanks to his ability to recognize worthy artists, he expanded his collection of truly great works of the Italian Renaissance - Divine and profane love of Titian, Danae of Coretzo,
The Deposition of Raphael- and masterpieces by Rubens, Domenicino and the Roman Baroque. Today, the Borghese Gallery is unique in terms of the number and value of Caravaggio's paintings and the sculptures of Bernini that it hosts.
After the relatively recent renovation, the villa regained its former splendor, as architecture, decoration and exhibited works are orchestrated in an incredibly rich ensemble, becoming a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.
This volume presents around sixty works.
In addition, some pages are dedicated to two rooms - the Hall of Aeneas and Anchisis and the Hall of Apollo and Daphne - in which the architectural elements, the furnishings and the works on display combine the old and the new and reflect the typical elegance of the Roman collectors of the 17th century.
