BOOK - TURNER & CONSTABLE - No17 - ORAMA PUBLICATIONS

John Constance was born on June 11, 1776 in East Bergholt, a village in Suffock, northeast of London. His mother, Anne Watts, was the daughter of a cooper. His father, Golding Constance, was a wealthy miller, owner of two watermills at Flatford and Dendam, among others, along the Staur River. The artist was the fourth of six children: Ann had been born in 1768, Martha in 1769, Golding Jr. in 1774, Mary in 1781 and Abraham in 1783.

The Conständer family lived in a house near the mill at Flatford, and after 1774 moved to a larger residence in the centre of St. Bergholt.

As soon as he finished primary school, his father tried to convince him to succeed him in his work, but young John expressed his passion for painting to which he had been introduced by John Dunthorne, a local plumber and amateur painter.

In 1795 he was presented to Sir George Bomont, a collector and art expert, and to John Fisher, bishop of Solskjaer.

The following year he stayed with his family in Edmonton.

There he came into contact with John Thomas Smith, John Kranatz and other personalities of the local artistic world, who influenced him by suggesting that he read critical texts on art, helping him to get to know and appreciate the artists of the time and giving him lessons in the technique of painting, especially drawing with pencil and watercolor.
