BOOK - PRORACHAILITES - No25 - ORAMA PUBLICATIONS

Although he was not a member of the Pre-Raphaelix Brotherhood, Ford Maddox Brown had close relations with it, since he shared the dissatisfaction of his fellow artists with academic classicism and their interest in medieval painting.

He was older than the other pre-Raphaelites; he was born in 1821 in Kale, and his father was a naval officer. In 1835 he settled in Bruges, where he studied at the Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, under the guidance of Albert Gregorius, a student of Jacques-Louis David.

He then studied at Ghent capo in 1838 in Antwerp, with Gustav Vapers.

In 1841 he married his cousin Elizabeth Bromley and then went to Paris and London, where he participated in the selection of artists for the decoration of the Parliament building.

Very important was his stay in Rome, in 1845-1846, during which he met Italian painting and came into contact with the Nazarnes.

In 1846 he became a widower and returned to England. Two years later he met his seven-year-old junior, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who asked him to give him painting lessons and introduced him to Hunt and Miley, to whom Brown taught what he had learned during his stay in Rome, influencing their style.
