Diego de Silva i Velásqueth was born in Seville in 1599.
His father, Joao Rodriguez Silva, was of Portuguese descent, and his mother, Heronima Velázquez, came from Seville. He took his mother's surname according to Portuguese tradition, which was often followed in Andalusia as well.
As was the case with many other families of Portuguese origin who settled in Seville in the late 16th century, it is possible that the distant ancestors of Velashqueth were Jews.
However, the claim of the noble origin of his grandparents has not yet been ascertained - he later claimed that the Silvas could locate their ancestors in the depths of the centuries, up to the legendary Aeneas Silvius, king of the ancient city of Alba Loga.
The author of his biography in the 18th century, Palomino, also addressed this issue.
An even more important factor in Velacqueth's life was the stimulating environment in which he was born.
