Wedesteig is a road that passes near the walls of Leyden. On this road, on July 15, 1606, was born the eighth and penultimate son of a miller - owner of a windmill on the banks of the River Rhine, known as "Van Raine" (of the Rhine).
The family, of Catholic origin, joined Calvinism. The child's parents, Harmen and Cornelia, chose the unusual name Rembrande for the newborn infant. Perhaps because they might have wanted a girl to whom they would give the name of Cornelius' mother, Remigia.
His parents, who had already been married for 17 years when Rembrande was born, were no longer young. Indeed, Rembrande always saw them as if they were burdened by a biblical old age. According to legend, the patronym Harmenszon (Harmen's son) was added to the child's name along with the surname Van Raine.
