BOOK - GREAT MUSEUMS / PARIS LOUVRE - No1 - VISION PUBLICATIONS

Few museums in the world can boast of such a large and varied collection of paintings as the Louvre Museum, which includes all European schools, from the end of the 13th to the middle of the 19th century, in the most diverse genres and forms: from paintings small dimensions to monumental compositions, from frescoes to decorative objects. The long history of the compilation of the collection - almost five centuries - and its dual nature - first the ruler's collection and then the national museum - resulted in the initial acquisitions of the French kings, who gave priority to French painting of the grand si?cle and the Italian painting of the Renaissance, to be completed little by little, following the evolution of aesthetics and the history of art.

In this way, the Louvre acquired works by Flemish and Dutch, Italian artists of the 17th and 18th centuries and works by the so-called "primitives", i.e. masters prior to the 15th century from both Northern and Southern Europe. Not too many but quite important Spanish and German paintings were still acquired, from the period of the International Gothic style to the beginning of the 19th century. The museum's exceptional collection therefore offers the visitor classic works by the great masters and founders of the schools, but also by their students and lesser-known artists, in a representative presentation of the entire evolution of European painting. (From the presentation on the back cover of the book)
