BOOK - MANTEGNA - No33 - ORAMA PUBLICATIONS

Andrea Mantenia was probably born in 1431, in Izzola di Kartouro, a small village near Padova that at that time belonged to Vicenza. The few elements referring to his family describe him as "of humble origin". His father, Biajo, is a carpenter, that is, he belongs to the class of inferior craftsmen. For the young Mantenias we only know that for some time he worked as a shepherd in the area around his village. Around 1440 we know he went to Padova. There lived his brother, Tomazo, who had a relative success as a tailor and lived in the district of Saint Lucia, where Andrea will also stay. Still very young, he enters the workshop of the established Francesco Squartsone, an artist with great instinct for promising youngsters in the artistic field, and Mantegna's talent is established within a few years. A clever and discerning spirit, he finds in the city of Padua a very lively humanistic climate, in which he perfects his classical sensitivity and a taste for antiquity, which will remain a constant point of reference in his production. Very few artists of the Renaissance received in life and after death so many praises from people of letters and art as Mantenia, whom his contemporaries considered a new Apellis.
His fame transcends the boundaries of Padova and the Court of Mantua - where he will work for more than forty years - so that he will be remembered by Jacopo Sanatsaro in his poem "Arcadia" and by Louis Ariosto in "Orlandos Howling". (From the version)
