BOOK - FRIEDRICH - Νο10 - ORAMA PUBLICATIONS

In a small bay on the German Baltic coast, lies Greifswald, a town in the province of Pomerania. A rich and lively port in the Middle Ages, Greifswald was occupied by the Swedes in the 18th century. Here, on September 5, 1774, Kaspar David Friedrich was born, the sixth of ten children of a soap and candle producer, Adolf Gottlieb Friedrich, and Sophie Dorotea Behli, who came from New Brandenburg.

The Friedrich family lived in a large house, at 28, Lanchen Street.

Kaspar, a shy and short-spoken boy, experienced tragic family events at a young age: His mother died when he was only seven years old, and later one of his brothers drowned.

The rigorous upbringing he received from his father, who was inspired by the most rigid Protestant principles, as well as the teachings from the religious texts of the theologian Gothard Ludwig Kozengarten, had a profound influence on the future artist in terms of his view of the world and his relationship with nature.

His master of Art at the University of Greifswald, Johann Gottfried Kuistorp, directed him towards pietist and religious literature. Under his direction, Friedrich did his first artistic studies in 1790, copying paintings and landscapes of his teacher's private collection, and painting several works by nature.
